Tennessee county passes another ban on crypto operations

The Hawkins County Commissioners in Tennessee unanimously passed a second ban on Monday against crypto mining operations, extending restrictions on the establishment, construction, installation, expansion, and operation of crypto mining facilities and data centers in the county's unincorporated areas. This move follows a similar ban enacted in September 2025 aimed at blocking the ExoticRidge mining company from setting up operations locally. The commission had already affirmed its authority to impose such bans through a resolution in January 2026.

Earlier in January 2026, ExoticRidge and county officials proposed a settlement to allow the company to construct and operate its mining facility under strict noise limitations. The terms would limit noise at the property line to 80 A-weighted decibels (dBA) for no more than 30 minutes within any four-hour period. Despite this agreement, the county's renewed and broader ban represents a more comprehensive prohibition of crypto mining in the area.

This county-level action is part of a larger pattern of regulatory measures by Tennessee officials to restrict cryptocurrency-related activities. Notably, as of July 1, Tennessee implemented a statewide ban on the use and installation of cryptocurrency ATMs and kiosks, a law passed in April 2026 in response to scams that primarily affected senior citizens using these machines to send funds to fraudsters.
